.co vs .com domains: which should you choose for your Colombian business?

Your domain extension impacts SEO, trust, and brand perception. We explain the real differences, no myths.

A decision that seems small but isn't

When you register your business online, the domain is your permanent address. Changing it later has costs in SEO, brand recognition, and printed materials. It's worth thinking it through from the start.

.com: the global standard

.com has 35 years of history and is the most recognized extension in the world. When someone hears your company's name, they assume the site ends in .com. Advantages of .com:
  • ·Universal recognition
  • ·Perception of an established company
  • ·Easier to remember for international audiences
Main downside: the good .com names are taken. Many companies end up with long names or hyphens.

.co: Colombia online

.co is Colombia's national domain but has gained global popularity as a short alternative to .com. Twitter used it for years at t.co. Advantages of .co:
  • ·Clear signal of a Colombian business (useful for local SEO)
  • ·More name options available
  • ·Google treats it the same as .com in global searches
Downside: some older users don't recognize it and type .com out of habit.

What about .com.co?

It's the most explicitly Colombian option. Ideal if your market is 100% local and you want to reinforce national identity.

My recommendation

If you have the budget: register both (.com and .co) and point one to the other. Protect your brand across both extensions. If you have to choose one: for local markets, .co. For international ambitions, .com. --- We register and manage .co, .com, .com.co domains and more. See domain options.
